Cheap office space "off the grid" in any location

Strengths: According to the UN, 20% of the total urban population in 2050 will live in slums. Solutions for affordable houses and working spaces without dependency on urban infrastructural grids become necessary. This temporary office space made from Swiss Cell, a new building material based on paper, could be placed in any location where start-up companies need to be supported by cheap, quickly built, flexible and sustainable office space. While simple in material and assembly, it offers quality in space.

Difficulties: While the potential of the material is clear and already widely published, the building of first prototypes proved more difficult than expected. Panels are currently fabricated by hand. Partners for developing the machinery for large scale or for onsite production had to be identified. For use in western countries which are still the primary market, stringent certification processes have to be undertaken. The project is currently on a good track, but will take time to come to fruition.

Extra information: Designing sustainable buildings should be a matter not only of meeting standards, but much rather of understanding each component of a building and the building itself as a component, or a subsystem, in a larger system which needs to be assessed for its overall sustainability. This way of thinking can lead to radically new solutions. Instead of preventing innovation, focusing only on what cannot be done; sustainability then becomes a source of new ideas.
