Private space transformed into collective usable space

Strengths: Notions of private property are destabilized and everybody is encouraged to actively participate in the production of the contemporary city, inventing new types of ecologies and systems.. The urban fabric, as we know it, stimulates speculation and encourages fear and segregation. This project, on the other hand, proposes doing into another direction. Developed on a microscale, it has the potential to generate a new landscape and a more sustainable and collective way of life.

Difficulties: The negotiation with the lot owners, who are afraid to loose their propertie. The negotiation with the city governors, because the idea is to transform this project in public politics. If one owner loans its lot to turn into a temporary public space, it could have some compensation with public taxs.

Extra information: this project began in 2005 and continued in 2006, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. In 2008 it was done in Fortaleza, north of Brazil. It had the colaboration of artists and architects and local people. It had been sponsored by art institutions.
