increasing the quality of living and learning for children in South Africa's townships
Strengths: Addressing the lack of early childhood facilities in South African townships the matchbox concept demonstrates a repetetive method for the effective upgrade or implementation of preschools. It increases the living and learning conditions of children living in impoverished areas, it empowers the care taker and parents, and creates new perspectives for the South African society.
Difficulties: As governmental budgets don’t cover the construction of early childhood facilities, the amount of preschools is limited to the available funding which matchbox can raise. Although the NGO works close with the local communities during the initial phase, the sustainability of each project relies on the motivation of the local management team.
Extra information: The first matchbox upgrades are planned for 2011 in partnerschip with the communities, local representatices and the City of Cape Town.
