Sustainable social housing
Strengths: Tlacolula is designed as an ecosystem, not a housing development. It considers the distance from the city by integrating transportation hubs, commercial, service, and green areas. The homes employ simple to use alternative energy resources such as solar heaters and rainwater collection. The houses range in cost to incorporate people from different economic backgrounds. The houses are designed to grow as the homeowners´ needs change, allowing them to add value to their home as time goes on.
Difficulties: The project is located about 40 minutes away from the nearest major city and airport. It is surrounded by a mostly rural area where urbanization will not reach for the next ten years. Although the sustainable devices and principles employed are simple to use, extensive education for the homeowners will be necessary in order for this ecosystem to function to its maximum potential.
Extra information: The houses´ bricks are fabricated with the on-site excavation waste, reducing the impact on the environment and transportation costs.
