Create social capital, improve neighborhoods, and enhance the environment through the creation of new urban commons and pocket neighborhoods
Strengths: Grass roots revitalization strategy that is powerful - and replicable - anywhere in the world at minimal expense.
Difficulties: It is relatively easy for neighbors to come together, create a vision for their backyard commons, remove their fencing, and create a common space for themselves. It is more challenging, from a legal perspective, to reclaim city property - such as alleys or other government facilities - but certainly not impossible. Realistic expectations and group effort will lead to success. This concept is ripe for real estate developers to adopt.
Extra information: If viewers are interested in creating these urban commons and pocket neighborhoods in their city, the non-profit citizen sector organization, Ashoka's Community Greens, is ready to help. Just email greens@ashoka.org.
