Urban farming as a catalyst
Strengths: MUF breaks the barriers existing in dense cities generated by fenced vacant lots waiting to be built MUF gives function to unused spaces integrating them into the public space MUF makes productive unproductive land by urban farming MUF promotes the interaction of different social groups reinforcing the community feeling MUF is an artistic intervention with a strong visual impact MUF increases the amount of green areas in urban areas producing an environmental benefit
Difficulties: MUF has to break many conventions which are the main drawbacks to promote innovation and progress MUF negotiates between private and public domains being based on a delicate mutual consensus MUF uses temporarily private properties and needs the collaboration of private owners MUF extends the limits of the public space and requires the collaboration of the local authorities MUF is based on the action of local actors which have to be motivated to participate
Extra information: This proposal has been recently awarded in an open competition in Madrid The Municipality of Madrid is currently involved in studying new ways of improving the open space quality in the ceter of the city and in realizing them.
