Procedures for New Public Spaces in the Medina of Fez

Strengths: The project provides: improved regional water quality; remediation of contaminated soils, enhancement of wildlife habitats; provision of new public spaces in a dense medieval urban fabric with programs based on local needs; economic restructuring and development to transition existing tannery operations to a more environmentally and economically sustainable model; a multiperformative methodology fit for the developing world where resources are scarce.

Difficulties: Since the project is ambitious in scale and encompasses a citywide masterplan for water measure improvements, it is susceptible to external pressures that could easily impede and slow its realization as whole. However it was designed so that pilot projects can stand on their own. The move of leather tanners to a nearby industrial quarter will displace some of the existing social networks based on economic transitions, but we are hoping that our new leather crafting model will generate new ones.

Extra information: This project design came about as an international collaboration of professionals and scholars from around the world, including Harvard, the University of Toronto and Berkeley. This collaborative was seeking to find manner in which infrastructure could come to better the lifestyle of developing world urban dwellers.
